Chemical peels are one of the most misunderstood treatments in esthetics. The word "peel" conjures images of dramatically peeling skin, significant downtime, and dramatic results — and while some peels do involve all of that, the spectrum is enormous. A mild enzyme peel and an aggressive TCA peel are both technically "chemical peels" but they're wildly different in mechanism, intensity, downtime, and appropriate use cases.
Here's the complete, honest guide to what peels actually are and how to know which level is right for you.
What a Chemical Peel Actually Is
A chemical peel is the application of one or more chemical agents to the skin that cause controlled exfoliation of the outer skin layers. The degree of exfoliation — how deep the peel penetrates and how much skin is removed — determines the intensity of the peel and the results it produces.
The controlled damage triggers the skin's healing response: old, damaged cells are removed, and new cell turnover is stimulated. The result, after healing, is typically smoother texture, more even tone, reduced hyperpigmentation, and (in deeper peels) improved skin structure.
The Three Levels of Chemical Peels
Superficial Peels (Light Peels)
These affect only the very outermost layer of the skin — the stratum corneum and upper epidermis. They involve minimal to no visible peeling, little to no downtime, and can be performed regularly (every 2-4 weeks in a series).
Common agents: enzyme peels (papain, bromelain), low-concentration AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic), low-concentration BHA (salicylic acid), Jessner's solution in low concentrations.
Best for: mild texture improvement, light brightening, acne maintenance, general skin health. These are the peels most estheticians perform.
Medium-Depth Peels
These penetrate through the epidermis into the upper dermis. They involve visible peeling (flaking, sometimes significant shedding) over several days, some redness, and typically 5-7 days of social downtime.
Common agents: higher-concentration TCA (20-35%), combination Jessner's/TCA, modified phenol formulas.
Best for: moderate hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, textural irregularities. Often performed in a medical spa or physician's office depending on the concentration.
Deep Peels
These penetrate to the mid-dermis and produce the most dramatic results — and the most significant risks and longest recovery. Deep peels (notably the Baker-Gordon phenol peel) are almost exclusively performed in medical settings under physician supervision.
Best for: severe wrinkles, deep scarring, significant sun damage. Not a routine esthetic treatment.
Common Peel Agents and What They Do
Glycolic Acid (AHA): The smallest AHA molecule, meaning it penetrates the skin most readily. Excellent for overall brightening, cell turnover stimulation, and mild-moderate hyperpigmentation. Can be photosensitizing — SPF is essential post-treatment.
Lactic Acid (AHA): Larger molecule than glycolic, gentler penetration. Also a humectant, so it provides some hydration alongside exfoliation. Excellent for sensitive skin, dry skin, and those new to chemical exfoliation.
Mandelic Acid (AHA): Even larger molecule, most gentle AHA. Derived from almonds. Excellent for darker skin tones because the gentler penetration reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that can occur with more aggressive exfoliation.
Salicylic Acid (BHA): The only BHA in common use. Oil-soluble, meaning it penetrates into pores and addresses sebaceous congestion from the inside. Ideal for acne-prone and oily skin.
Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA): More aggressive than the above. Used in medium-depth peels. Highly effective for pigmentation, fine lines, and texture but requires careful technique and carries more risk of adverse effects.
Enzyme Peels: Use fruit-derived enzymes (papain from papaya, bromelain from pineapple) to gently digest dead skin cells. The most gentle form of chemical exfoliation. Excellent for sensitive skin, rosacea, or anyone new to exfoliation.
What to Expect: Before, During, and After
Before:
- A proper consultation and skin analysis is essential
- Avoid retinoids, other exfoliants, and potential sensitizers for several days before your appointment (your esthetician will give specific guidance)
- Certain medical conditions and medications (isotretinoin, autoimmune conditions, active cold sores) are contraindications
- Darker skin tones require extra care — specific peel selection and possible pre-treatment with tyrosinase inhibitors to reduce PIH risk
During:
- Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed
- The peel solution is applied carefully, with attention to timing and skin response
- You may feel warmth, tingling, mild stinging (ranges from barely noticeable to significant depending on the peel)
- The peel is neutralized (for some agents) or allowed to self-neutralize
Immediately After:
- Redness is normal — ranges from mild (light peels) to significant (medium peels)
- Tightness and mild sensitivity are common
- Your esthetician will apply a soothing mask and appropriate post-treatment care
Days Following:
- Light peels: minimal visible change; possible mild flakiness
- Medium peels: visible peeling (often begins around day 3), skin may look worse before it looks better
- All peels: strict SPF use is mandatory; avoid active ingredients (retinoids, additional exfoliants) during the healing phase; keep skin clean and gently moisturized
Results:
- Light peels: subtle improvement visible after 1-2 weeks; best results with a series of treatments
- Medium peels: significant improvement visible after healing; one treatment can produce meaningful results
The Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation Consideration
For clients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI (medium to dark skin tones), aggressive chemical peels carry a higher risk of PIH — darkening of the skin at areas that experienced trauma or inflammation. This doesn't mean peels are off-limits for darker skin tones, but it does mean that peel selection, concentration, and technique must be calibrated carefully.
Experienced estheticians working with diverse skin tones will use gentler acids (mandelic, lactic), lower concentrations, shorter contact times, and possibly pre-treatment preparation to minimize PIH risk. If your esthetician is recommending an aggressive glycolic or TCA peel for your darker skin tone without discussing PIH risk management, seek a second opinion.
